Ssyrathis
Ssyrathis, also called Skarrgul by the lesser races of the kingdom.
Naming: Two registers, reflecting the nation's actual social structure — a Medusa aristocracy ruling over a largely Hobgoblin population. Ssyrathis is the formal/court name — sibilant, aristocratic, used in diplomatic correspondence and by outsiders (a Confederacy diplomat would say Ssyrathis). Skarrgul is the common/vernacular name — harsher, Hobgoblin-inflected, what's actually spoken day to day within the nation itself. The gap between the two names is itself a quiet signal of who holds formal power to name the place and who actually lives in it.
Territory: The Iberian Peninsula (Spain & Portugal). Isolated by the Pyrenees (Dwarf-held) to the north, bordered by the Mediterranean to the south and east, and cut off from Morocco by the Giant-held Gibraltar corner.
Government: An empire, ruled by a Medusa Queen/Empress. Medusae are a goblin subspecies, not a separate mythological import — the petrification curse runs in goblin blood, and it's exactly the kind of raw, personal power that let Medusae take the top of a hierarchy the Hobgoblins had already built for themselves. Power here is literally embodied — court intrigue is conducted behind veils, and to see the ruler clearly is to risk death. The current Queen's features favor Hobgoblin bloodlines more than the classical Greek image of a medusa, which tracks: Hobgoblins and Medusae are close kin, both goblin stock, and the aristocracy and the caste beneath it are more related than either side likes to advertise. (There is more than one Medusa in the world — how that works is a deliberately deferred, very low-priority question. See Open Questions.)
Population: Filled out beyond Medusae themselves — a Hobgoblin caste serves as the military/organizational backbone, alongside other Greek/Roman-derived monsters and legendary beings, and a growing population of Gargoyles. Basilisks and creatures naturally immune to petrification serve as natural subordinates and personal guards to Medusae. This makes the Monster Kingdom a genuine organized power — a real court, a real military structure, a real diplomatic presence — rather than a savage horde on the map's edge, which sets it apart from how "monster nations" are usually handled.
The Hobgoblins: The "civilized," lawful branch of the goblin peoples of Mexico — see Goblins document. Hobgoblins who leave Mexico overwhelmingly end up here, where their aptitude for order, hierarchy, and organization made them the natural administrative and military caste under the Medusa aristocracy. There's a real irony underneath that arrangement: Hobgoblins hold and enforce the Yoke Sigil — cruel law, caste without justice — and are themselves the caste being ruled.
The Gargoyles: Beings once turned to stone by a Medusa, later reanimated with the spirit of a lesser devil. A fair number of them populate Ssyrathis. How exactly this works, and what it means that more than one Medusa exists to have done the turning, is very low priority and deliberately left for a much later session.
Religion: Hobgoblins, and Ssyrathis by extension, follow a sister archdevil to Shemazar, the fallen divine being the Giants trace their own ancestry to. Her name, nature, and relationship to Shemazar are a campaign-level reveal, not front matter — see Religion and Giant Kingdoms documents. This puts Ssyrathis's state religion in the "devils, lawful evil" camp, distinct from the goblins of Mexico, who worship demons.
Sigils: Ssyrathis's Hobgoblins hold the Yoke Sigil — cruel law and unjust caste, sitting outside the thirteen Great House Sigils alongside the Giants' Bone Sigil and the Goblins' Cinder Sigil. Some Monster Kingdom residents also carry Aberrant Sigils, giving Aberrant bearers an actual homeland rather than existing only as scattered, hunted individuals or underground networks elsewhere in the world. See The Sigil Houses document.
Borders: - Dwarven Kingdom (Pyrenees): the chokepoint between Iberia and the Imperium (France), held by the Dwarves. - Giants (Gibraltar): the single most tense border on the map — two non-human powers in direct contact, neither of which most human nations fully trust. - Myrean Confederacy (unofficial): across the Mediterranean, facing the Confederacy's Iberian-side shore and island holdings — the Confederacy's most exposed, least-defensible territory.
Diplomatic weight: With direct borders to two established powers (Dwarves, Giants) and an unofficial one to a third (Confederacy), the Monster Kingdom is not isolated on the map — it carries real diplomatic and strategic weight, complicating any simple "civilized nations vs. monsters" framing.
Open: full court structure and succession rules, specific Hobgoblin role and organization beyond the broad strokes above, which other Greek/Roman monsters and legendary beings populate the empire, how multiple Medusae actually work (very low priority).
